Booking choice: The Giza pyramids entry ticket, Valid 1 day. Book this Tour details
Buying a ticket for the pyramids used to mean a queue, a cash window and a walk from the gate by the Mena House hotel. Three things have changed. Tickets are electronic, with QR codes and smart gates. The desks take cards, not cash. And since April 2025 most visitors enter through a new visitor centre on the south side and ride an electric shuttle around the plateau.
This guide explains which ticket you need, where to buy it, how the gate and shuttle work, and which tours already include the ticket. We leave prices out: they change, and they depend on your nationality category.
The quick answer
Yes, you need a plateau ticket: it covers the area around the pyramids and the Sphinx and the shuttle buses. Going inside a pyramid is a separate ticket. Buy online on the official Egymonuments site, at the self-service machines or the desks by card, or book the QR entry ticket and walk in with your phone.
Do I need a ticket to see the pyramids?
Yes. The plateau ticket is the basic one; interiors, a tomb, the evening show and the Grand Egyptian Museum are all sold separately.
You can see the pyramids from the road and from rooftops in Giza, but to walk up to them you need the general plateau ticket. Here is how the tickets fit together:
| Ticket | What it covers | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Plateau (general admission) | The pyramid exteriors, the Sphinx area, the shuttle buses | Single entry: leave and you buy again |
| Khufu interior | The inside of the Great Pyramid | Limited numbers; can sell out early |
| Khafre interior | The inside of Khafre's pyramid | Reopened 11 September 2026 |
| Menkaure interior | The inside of Menkaure's pyramid | Closed since 11 September 2026 |
| Tomb of Queen Meresankh III | A decorated tomb on the plateau | Separate ticket |
| Sound and Light show | Evening show at the Sphinx | Separate ticket; check the schedule |
| Grand Egyptian Museum | The museum, about 2 km away | Timed tickets on tickets.gem.eg |
Ticket types as reported by official, news and guide sources in 2026. Check egymonuments.gov.eg before you buy.
How much does it cost to enter the pyramids?
It depends on which tickets you need: the plateau ticket, any interior, and the museum each add to the total. Rates also differ by nationality category and for students.
We do not print figures because they change, sometimes more than once a year. What decides your total:
- Your nationality category: official ticketing in Egypt separates Egyptian visitors from foreign ones. The Grand Egyptian Museum, for example, sells tickets for Egyptians, for Arab or other nationalities, and for expatriates.
- The interior: the Khufu ticket is the big extra. Khafre's interior is a smaller one.
- Students and children: a student discount with valid student ID and free entry for young children are reported. Bring the ID card.
- Extras: the Meresankh tomb, the evening show and the museum are each separate.
A tour price can hide or include all of this. Compare what is in the booking, as the tour guide explains.
Where do you buy Giza pyramids tickets?
Online on the Ministry's Egymonuments site, at self-service machines and desks at the plateau by card, or through a reseller that sends a QR code.
The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities sells tickets on the official Egymonuments website. At the plateau, four self-service machines sell entry tickets by bank card, next to the staffed outlets. In August 2026 the ministry said its electronic ticketing covers 112 museums and sites, including the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, and named the Experience Egypt app alongside the official sites, per Khaleej Times.
Some guides report that the official portal sometimes has payment problems. If yours fails, the machines and desks at the gate work by card. Carry two cards from different banks in case one is refused.

Can you pay cash at the pyramids?
No. Since June 2023 the ticket desks at the Pyramids of Giza take bank cards, including Egypt's Meeza card, not cash.
The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced on 2 June 2023 that the Pyramids of Giza, the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, the Citadel and sites in Aswan would accept payment by card only. The half-day and Saqqara tour listings repeat the point: entry tickets must be paid by card. Cash is still useful on the day, in small notes, for a tip, a bottle of water or a toilet.
How does the new pyramids entrance and shuttle work?
You enter at the visitor centre on the Cairo-Fayoum road, then ride electric shuttle buses between the stops. The shuttle is included in the plateau ticket. Private cars and tour buses stop at the gate.
The new entrance opened for pilot operations on 8 April 2025, as part of a project run with Orascom Pyramids Entertainment. It replaced the old gate near the Mena House hotel. Al-Ahram Weekly described a visitor centre that introduces the pyramids and the Sphinx, with replicas of tools used in building and a memorabilia collection, plus rest areas, restaurants, ATMs and shaded seating. Private cars and tour buses park outside. Exceptions for large groups and for visitors with limited mobility are arranged in advance.
The shuttles run a hop-on, hop-off loop. Stops include the visitor centre, the Panorama point, the pyramids, the Sphinx and the riding zone for camels and horses, and the number of stops has grown since 2025. In July 2026 the operator announced funding for 30 more multi-stop electric buses, per Egypt Independent. The gate by the Sphinx on the east side still works as an entrance, with a smaller ticket counter. Our post on the new entrance and shuttle buses tracks the changes.

Can you visit the pyramids without a tour?
Yes. Buy the ticket, take a taxi or ride-hailing car to the gate, and use the shuttles. You give up a guide's explanations and a buffer against touts.
Most independent visitors use ride-hailing from their hotel. The drive from central Cairo takes 30 to 45 minutes or more, depending on traffic. Metro Line 2 runs to Giza station, but it does not reach the plateau; you still need a taxi from there. Some drivers ask for extra on arrival, so agree the trip in the app and walk away from the gate area before you book the ride back.
On the plateau you can go at your own pace: the Great Pyramid first, the Panorama point by shuttle, then down to the Sphinx and the Valley Temple. Expect offers of camel rides, photos and "help". A polite no and walking on works. Uniformed men who say a path is closed and steer you toward stables are a known trick, as is a "sold out" claim at the window.
Going on your own? The QR entry ticket gets you through the gate and onto the shuttles, valid for one day, with no queue at the desk.
Book thisWhat does the Giza QR entry ticket include?
General admission to the plateau and use of the shuttle buses, valid for one day. No guide, no transport, and no pyramid interior.
The QR entry ticket sold by Nice Tours is a plateau ticket delivered to your phone. The listing is clear in its notes: it is for general admission only and "does not include entry inside any pyramid", which you buy separately at the site. It does not include transport, a guide, meals or pickup.
Guests like the simplicity. One wrote that "Admission with the QR code worked perfectly". Another gave the one tip that matters: "take a screen shot of your tickets as reception there is poor."

A QR code for the plateau gate and the shuttle buses, valid for one day. Screenshot it before you leave the hotel, then go at your own pace.
Book this Tour detailsWhich pyramids tours include the plateau ticket?
The museum day includes it outright. The private tour lists an entry ticket. The half-day and Saqqara days include it with the matching option. The Khufu tour lists the interior ticket.
If a listing says "if option booked", the cheaper option may leave you to buy the ticket at the desk, by card. Check the option name on the booking page.

No. It is a separate evening ticket. The shows are being redeveloped under a financing deal reported in 2026, so check the current schedule before you plan an evening around it.
Do you need a passport to buy pyramids tickets?
Bring your passport or a copy. Several tour listings ask for a passport or ID card, and you need valid ID for any student or reduced ticket.
