Pyramids Tour with Entry Inside the Great Pyramid

About this experience

The interior of the Great Pyramid needs its own ticket, and numbers inside are limited. This tour puts the Pyramid of Khufu entry ticket in the booking, along with a guide on site, transfers in a private air-conditioned car, water, taxes and tipping. The visit lasts about four hours. The description adds the Valley Temple and a close look at the Sphinx, and the guide offers to take your photos.

Inside, the climb is short and hard work. You enter by the Robbers' Tunnel, cut into the north face below the original entrance. Then comes the Ascending Passage, about 39 m long and about 1 m high, so most adults crouch. It opens into the Grand Gallery, about 47 m long and 8.6 m high, and ends in the King's Chamber with its empty granite sarcophagus. The walls are bare. The air is hot and humid. It is not for anyone with severe claustrophobia, knee or back trouble, or breathing problems. Allow 30 to 45 minutes inside.

Three gaps in the listing. It names the Khufu ticket but says nothing about the general plateau ticket, which is a separate ticket; ask the operator whether it is in the booking. The description says hotels in Cairo or Giza, yet the itinerary names New Cairo City as the pickup point, so confirm your address works. Lunch is listed but not shown in the four-hour itinerary: ask when it happens. Interiors also close for maintenance from time to time. Khufu closed for a month in May 2023, so the operator should tell you if your date is affected.

Tips before you book

  • Do the interior first, before the passage warms up with other visitors.
  • Wear shoes with grip. The ramps are steep and can be slippery.
  • Bring a small bag only. Bulky bags may have to stay at security.
  • Photo rules inside change. Ask at the entrance, and do not use a flash or a tripod.
  • Check which pyramid interiors are open this autumn. The Supreme Council of Antiquities rotates interiors for maintenance and gives no end dates.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ticket to go inside the Great Pyramid included?

Yes. The listing includes the Pyramid of Khufu entry ticket. It does not mention the general plateau ticket, which is separate, so ask the operator before you book.

Is it hot inside the Great Pyramid?

Yes. The passages are hot and humid, and the Ascending Passage is about 1 m high, so you climb bent over. Allow 30 to 45 minutes and carry water for afterwards.

Is it worth going inside the Great Pyramid?

For most first-timers, yes: you stand in the King's Chamber in the heart of the last surviving wonder of the ancient world. Expect bare walls, though. If tight spaces worry you, see the pyramids from outside and spend the time on the plateau instead.

Can you take pictures inside the Great Pyramid?

The rules have changed over the years and sources disagree. Ask at the entrance on the day. Flash and tripods are a bad idea in any case.
