The Grand Egyptian Museum and the pyramids

The Grand Egyptian Museum opened in November 2025 about 2 km from the pyramids, and it has changed how people plan a day in Giza. Both sites now fit in one day, if you get the order and the tickets right.

For decades, a Cairo trip meant the pyramids in the morning and the old Egyptian Museum in Tahrir in the afternoon, across town. The Grand Egyptian Museum sits beside the plateau. It was officially inaugurated on 1 November 2025 and opened to the public on 4 November, and it now holds the full Tutankhamun collection and Khufu's boats.

This guide shows how the museum and the pyramids fit into one day: the opening hours, how the timed tickets work, what to see first, and the tour that books both.

The quick answer

Yes, you can do both in one day: the museum is about 2 km from the pyramids. Do the plateau first, at opening, then the museum for the hot middle of the day. Museum tickets are timed and sold online on tickets.gem.eg. The pyramids and museum day includes both tickets, a guide and lunch.

Can you visit the Grand Egyptian Museum and the pyramids in one day?

Yes. The museum is about 2 km from the pyramids, so a day with the plateau in the morning and the museum after lunch works well.

The two sites are close, but they are separate: separate entrances, separate tickets, and a short drive between them. Most people take a car or join a tour. Some guides report a walkway between the plateau and the museum area, but it is not on the official visitor information we found, so do not plan on walking it in the heat.

The pyramids and museum day by OceanAir Travel is built for exactly this: an hour at the pyramids, 30 minutes at the Sphinx, 15 at the Valley Temple of Khafre, two guided hours in the museum and an hour for lunch, with hotel pickup on either side.

Should you see the pyramids or the museum first?

The pyramids first. The plateau is open sand with little shade, so go in the cool morning and save the indoor museum for midday.

There is a second reason. Seeing the pyramids before the museum gives the exhibits a setting: Khufu's boats mean more after you have stood beside his pyramid. On Wednesdays and Saturdays the museum galleries stay open until 9 pm, which allows a slower day with a break at your hotel in between.

Plateau in the morning, museum after: the museum day includes both entry tickets, an Egyptologist and lunch at an Egyptian restaurant.

What are the Grand Egyptian Museum opening hours?

The galleries open at 9 am every day, closing at 6 pm on most days and at 9 pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Last entry is one hour before the galleries close.

The official hours on tickets.gem.eg list no closed day. The complex, with its gardens, shops and restaurants, opens half an hour before the galleries.

How do Grand Egyptian Museum tickets work?

Buy online on tickets.gem.eg. Tickets are timed, valid for one date and entry time, single entry, non-transferable and non-refundable except in force majeure.

The official ticket site sells two kinds: an Admission ticket and a Guided Tour ticket with a guide in Arabic or English. The entry time limits when you go in, not how long you stay. Bring ID if you claim a reduced ticket. Bags larger than 40 by 40 cm go to the cloakroom, and belongings may be inspected.

Because tickets cannot be refunded, book the museum after your flights and hotel are fixed. A tour with the museum ticket in the booking, and free cancellation up to 24 hours before, moves that risk off your shoulders.

What should you see at the Grand Egyptian Museum?

The Tutankhamun Galleries, the Grand Staircase, the colossus of Ramesses II in the Grand Hall and Khufu's boats.

  • The Tutankhamun Galleries: the young king's treasures, 5,398 pieces, shown together for the first time, per Wikipedia. His mummy stays in the Valley of the Kings at Luxor.
  • The Grand Hall: the standing granite Ramesses II, 11 m tall, moved here from Cairo. Another colossus of the same king still lies on its back at Memphis.
  • The Grand Staircase: statues of kings and gods on a staircase that climbs several floors, with a view of the pyramids from the top.
  • Khufu's Boats Museum: the king's boats, found beside the Great Pyramid. The old Solar Boat Museum on the plateau is closed.

How long do you need at the Grand Egyptian Museum?

Two hours gives you the highlights with a guide. Allow up to four hours to see the Tutankhamun Galleries and the main galleries at your own pace.

A guide published at the opening by Khaleej Times suggested up to four hours. The museum day gives you two guided hours, which covers the Grand Hall, the staircase and the Tutankhamun treasures in an organised walk. If you want more, book the museum on its own on a Wednesday or Saturday evening.

What does the pyramids and museum day tour include?

Hotel pickup in Cairo or Giza, an Egyptologist, entry to the plateau and the museum, bottled water and lunch. Drinks at lunch and the camel ride are extra.

The listing includes pickup and drop-off at your Cairo or Giza hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle, a professional Egyptologist, bottled water, lunch at an Egyptian restaurant, and entry tickets to the Pyramids and Sphinx area and the Grand Egyptian Museum. A camel ride is an optional stop with an extra fee. The listing does not mention a pyramid interior. It is not suitable for wheelchair users, and luggage and large bags are not allowed.

Guests write about the guides most. "Tony was beyond knowledgeable and this is the second time booking with this company", one wrote in September 2026.
