Going inside the Great Pyramid

You can climb into the heart of Khufu's pyramid, along a low passage and up the tall Grand Gallery to a bare granite room. It is short, steep and warm, and for many people it is the moment they remember.

Standing next to the Great Pyramid is enough for most visitors. Going inside is a different experience: you leave the heat and noise of the plateau, bend double in a stone passage, and come out in a chamber built more than 4,500 years ago in the middle of the largest of the Giza pyramids.

It is also plain inside. No paintings, no inscriptions you can see, no treasure. This guide sets out what the route involves, who should skip it, which interiors are open as of October 2026, and how the ticket works.

The quick answer

Yes, you can go inside: Khufu's interior needs a separate ticket, sold in limited numbers. The route leads up a passage barely a metre high, through the Grand Gallery to the King's Chamber and its empty granite sarcophagus. Go early, wear shoes with grip, and skip it if you have claustrophobia or bad knees.

Can you go inside the Great Pyramid?

Yes, with a separate interior ticket on top of the plateau ticket. Numbers are limited, and in busy months tickets can sell out early in the day.

The plateau ticket covers the area around the pyramids and the Sphinx. The inside of Khufu's pyramid is a second ticket, and Khafre's and Menkaure's interiors have their own. There is no official daily figure for Khufu, but guides on the ground say the tickets are limited and that in high season they can be gone by mid-morning. Arrive at opening if you buy on the day. The plateau opens early in the morning, at 7 am in most 2026 guides; check egymonuments.gov.eg before you go.

The other route is a tour that includes it. The Khufu tour lists the Pyramid of Khufu entry ticket in what it includes, so the ticket is handled before you arrive.

The base of the Great Pyramid with tiny figures of visitors walking beside the huge blocks
The way in is a tunnel cut into the north face, a few metres above these base blocks.

What is inside the Great Pyramid?

A tunnel, a low rising passage, the tall Grand Gallery and the King's Chamber with its empty granite sarcophagus. The walls are bare stone.

Visitors use the Robbers' Tunnel, forced into the north face about 7 m above the base and traditionally credited to the workmen of the Caliph al-Ma'mun around 820 AD, per Wikipedia. The original entrance sits higher up, about 17 m above the base. From the tunnel the route goes like this:

  • The Ascending Passage: about 39 m long and barely more than a metre high, rising at about 26 degrees. You walk it bent over.
  • The Grand Gallery: about 46.7 m long and 8.6 m high, with walls that step inward toward the roof. After the passage it feels huge.
  • The King's Chamber: a room lined with granite, with an open granite sarcophagus and two small air shafts in the walls.

Above the King's Chamber lie five low relieving chambers, where the builders' work gangs painted Khufu's name. They are not part of the visit. Access to the Queen's Chamber and the deep Subterranean Chamber has changed over the years; ask at the entrance what is open on your day.

Is it worth it to go inside the Great Pyramid?

Yes, if you want to stand at the centre of the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World and you are fit for a steep crouch. No, if you expect decoration or have trouble in tight spaces.

UNESCO calls the Great Pyramid the only surviving wonder of the ancient world. That is the pull. The Grand Gallery is the best part: a tall, sloping hall that no photograph prepares you for. The King's Chamber itself is a plain stone room with a broken box in it, and some people come out wondering why they paid.

Our view: do it once, on a first visit, early in the day. If your knees or lungs object, skip it without guilt. The outside of the pyramid, the Sphinx and the panorama point are the visit for most people, and they need no extra ticket.

The interior ticket in the booking and a guide waiting at the pyramid: the Khufu tour takes four hours from your hotel.

Is it hot inside the Great Pyramid?

Warm and humid, yes, and the air gets heavier as the day goes on and more people pass through. Go in first, before the passages warm up.

The stone keeps the inside out of the direct sun, but the passages are narrow and the air moves slowly. Guides who take visitors in describe it as hot and humid, and the climb makes you sweat. Moisture and breath are part of why the pyramids close in turn for maintenance: when Khufu closed in 2023, the antiquities ministry spokesperson told Egypt Independent that the pyramid is exposed to "dust, moisture and droplets from visitors".

Carry water but drink it outside. Wear light clothing, leave the jacket with your guide, and plan the interior for the first hour of your visit. In summer, when Cairo highs average about 95 F (35 C), that matters even more.

How hard is the climb inside Khufu's pyramid?

Steep and cramped rather than long: allow 30 to 45 minutes. Not for people with severe claustrophobia, knee or back problems, or breathing difficulties.

The hard part is the Ascending Passage. It is about 1 m wide and a little over 1 m high, so most adults walk it bent at the waist, on a sloping floor with a handrail, while people come down the other way. The Grand Gallery is easier because you can stand up. Then you duck through a low antechamber into the King's Chamber.

Why are the pyramids closed to tourists?

The outsides are open. The interiors close in rotation for maintenance and conservation, so one pyramid shuts while another opens.

On 11 September 2026 the Supreme Council of Antiquities reopened the Pyramid of Khafre to visitors and closed the Pyramid of Menkaure, describing the move as part of a routine rotation system for maintenance across the Giza pyramids. No end date was given for Menkaure. Khufu itself closed for a month of maintenance in May 2023.

The practical point: do not plan your trip around a particular interior being open. Check the news close to your date, and read our post on Menkaure closing and Khafre reopening for the latest.

Khufu, Khafre or Menkaure: which pyramid should you go inside?

Khufu for the Grand Gallery and the story. Khafre for a quieter, simpler descent into a bedrock chamber. Menkaure is closed as of October 2026.

Each interior has its own ticket. Inside Khafre's pyramid, passages lead down and then along to a burial chamber cut into the bedrock, about 14 by 5 m, with a granite sarcophagus sunk into the floor, per Wikipedia. The explorer Giovanni Belzoni reached the chamber in March 1818 and found the sarcophagus open. It is less dramatic than Khufu, and one operator suggests it as the quieter choice.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to go inside the Great Pyramid?

Allow 30 to 45 minutes from the entrance and back, longer if there is a queue on the passage. The climb itself is short; waiting for people coming down takes time.

Can you take photos inside the Great Pyramid?

The rules have changed over the years and sources disagree. Ask at the interior entrance on the day, and do not use flash or a tripod. The outside of the pyramids can be photographed freely with a phone or camera.

Can you bring a bag inside the Great Pyramid?

Keep it small. Bulky bags may have to be left at security, and you need both hands free in the passage. Large bags and luggage are not allowed on several of the tours here.

Is there anything written inside the Great Pyramid?

Not in the rooms you visit. The builders' gang marks naming Khufu are in the relieving chambers above the King's Chamber, which are closed to visitors.
